Home TV News Charlie Cox Reflects on His Surprise Return as Daredevil: ‘I Really Had Put This to Bed’

Charlie Cox says he is still coming to terms with his return as Matt Murdock in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Daredevil: Born Again.

Marvel Studios

The return of Charlie Cox as Daredevil is something that Marvel fans have been crying out for since the cancelation of the Netflix series back in 2018. Despite petitions and trending topics, we were never sure whether it would actually happen. Now that it has, with Cox reprising the role in the likes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law before leading his own series in Daredevil: Born Again, the actor has reflected (via EW) on what his triumphant return has been like.

“I think I’m still coming to terms with it. It still feels too good to be true. I really had put this to bed emotionally; I didn’t think that this was going to happen. I literally don’t have the words to describe it. I feel incredibly grateful. I’m so excited about starting again and reading scripts and putting the costume back on and getting on set and being in New York. I can’t wait to start back in and tell more of this amazing character’s story.”

It certainly sounds like nobody doubted Charlie Cox’s return more than Charlie Cox himself, with the actor saying that he is “still coming to terms with it” and that he had “put this to bed.” What really shines through is Cox’s love for the character of Matt Murdock, a crystal-clear passion that explains why he is so good at bringing the Marvel vigilante to life, and why fans were so disappointed when it seemed to be all over.

Charlie Cox’s Co-Star Vincent D’Onofrio Kept the Hope Alive

Marvel Studios

While Charlie Cox had forced himself to move on, his Daredevil co-star Vincent D’Onofrio (who has also returned to the MCU as Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin) kept the hope alive for them both.

“After the show got canceled, Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Kingpin, and I would talk occasionally and just catch up as friends, but he never gave up hope. He was always like, “I’m sure they’re going to call us. I’m sure we’re going to do something. I bet you they’re going to do something again.” And I would listen to him and be like, “Sure … ” But secretly I’d be thinking he’s mad. There’s no way. Too much time has passed. It’s over. He’s delusional. He needs to let go. [Laughs] And lo and behold, I was the wrong one.”

Both Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will return as archenemies Daredevil and Kingpin in the upcoming Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again. While details of the series largely remain a secret, a recent rumor has claimed that Daredevil: Born Again will be based on the 2017-2018 comic book arc, Mayor Fisk, which finds Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin running for mayor of New York City.

Running throughout Daredevil #595-600, Mayor Fisk finds New York falling to The Kingpin. “Daredevil’s greatest and deadliest adversary is now the city’s newly elected mayor!” the synopsis for Mayor Fisk reads. “And the stage is set for their most unbelievable showdown yet. Matt Murdock has the law and his incredible abilities in his arsenal — but Fisk has an entire city on his side. As the mayor declares Daredevil Public Enemy No. 1, Matt Murdock receives the most incredible offer of his legal career!”

Daredevil: Born Again is expected to be released on Disney+ in Spring 2024.
