Nope Star Brandon Perea Wants to Be the MCU’s Johnny Storm

Dec 27, 2022

Until casting announcements are made for the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, fans will continue to debate who might be best suited to play each role. Actors interested in appearing in the film have also begun lobbying for their potential casting, with Nope actor Brandon Perea becoming the latest to toss his name in the hat. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Perea addressed his possible future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leading to a discussion on which role he desires most.

But first, Perea says he hasn’t spoken with Marvel at this time, but admits he wouldn’t be able to talk about it anyway, lest he inadvertently divulges huge spoilers like other MCU stars in the past. Still, the actor says he’s making his desire to join the MCU known with the hopes that it will bring that opportunity his way. Perea also feels that he could bring some authenticity to a potential Marvel role as someone who’s long been a big fan of comic books.

“I’d say this: I’ve put it out there in the universe, we’ll see what happens. I’ve been keeping my eyes out of what fans are saying of those universes, as well, of what they attract to, what they would like, and yeah, it’s cool to just get that input. They’re a tough fan base to please, which is understandable. I’m the same way. I’m a fan of the comics, I grew up on them, so I would love to be able to do it properly and just to serve the storylines properly and also serve the fans properly, and maybe even bring something different to the table, too, that someone can appreciate instead of by the book.”

Brandon Perea Is Ready to Join the MCU

Universal Pictures

Brandon Perea is open to playing different kinds of characters, agreeing that Nova and Nightcrawler could make good roles for him in the MCU. The standout character for Perea, however, would be the Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch. Perea says this is an idea he’s seen come up with fans doing fantasy casting and it’s since stuck as the character he’d like to play the most, as he can even envision himself in the role alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

“Well the thing I’ve been intrigued in recently, and I didn’t even bring this idea up, I started seeing it from fan casting. Johnny Storm, man. That was something that was very intriguing. I think my performance in Nope really highlights that. I’d have to bring some more swagger into it for sure for that Johnny Storm, but to be able to sit across from Tom Holland or something, like that best friend feel, I think, well, especially after watching the latest Spider-Man, we’d knock some scenes out of the park, man. It’d be so fun and it’d be a blessing.”

That’s not to say that Perea is only interested in Johnny Storm, as he can also see himself taking on the role of a supervillain, perhaps for a battle with Tom Hardy’s Venom in Sony’s Marvel Universe. Perea admits that he may be even better suited for another character he hasn’t thought of yet, so he’s not putting all of his hope into one specific role. With that said, Johnny Storm still remains his favorite for the time being following the fan suggestions.

“I am open to anything in there. Even, man, thinking about it, too, villains. I’d be down for a villain… All of the ones that you brought up, though, super intriguing. Like Sam Alexander’s Nova, of course, but also Richard Rider’s Nova, Nightcrawler. Man, Johnny Storm, a Venom villain. But yeah, I don’t know. We’ll see how the cards play out, man. I’m just going to let it vibe out and see what’s up. I’m not going to be too direct on it, because maybe there’s better ideas that are better than my own … Because I never thought about Johnny Storm, truly, growing up because it’s like, the fact that the fans were calling for it, I was like, ‘Hmm, I think I could do something like that.'”

Meanwhile, rumors are swirling over who might be playing the other roles. Following reports that You star Penn Badgley was eyed for Reed Richards, more recent rumors suggest that Adam Driver is wanted for the part. John Krasinski previously played a Variant of the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so he may or may not show up in the role as well. It was also reported that Killing Eve star Jodie Comer was up for Invisible Woman, though many fans have been lobbying for Emily Blunt to get that role.

Fantastic Four will be released in theaters on Nov. 8, 2024.
