Holt McCallany Says David Fincher Recently Considered Making A Movie Trilogy Instead Of Season 3

Jun 18, 2025

Many David Fincher enthusiasts, like us at The Playlist, were heartbroken when the news came down that a third season for his serial killer psychological drama “Mindhunter” was extremely unlikely, but the Netflix project might find new life in the form of three feature films.
Series co-lead Holt McCallany, recently seen in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” has given us a small sliver of hope that a true conclusion to “Mindhunter” could happen after a recent meeting with Fincher. The veteran actor, who first worked with Fincher on “Alien 3,” revealed during a chat with ScreenRant that the director, who is gearing up for his Cliff Booth follow-up film with Brad Pitt, is currently considering the idea of making “three two-hour movies” instead of another season.

“You know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance,” McCallany told ScreenRant. “I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”
While this sounds EXTREMELY promising for those looking for more “Mindhunter,” Fincher has a massive list of projects he’s tried to develop or attached himself to that never ended up materializing. So, we’ll certainly keep up the optimistic angle here, thanks to McCallany, but in Hollywood and in the era of streaming, not every cool-sounding project or revival comes together as much as we want them to.
It’s also possible that pivoting from a series to these hypothetical films could open up more money for budgets (period projects can be pricier than contemporary ones), as the streamer would have to renegotiate with everyone involved for new deals and could move toward a feature budget giving them a lot more room to increase salaries alongside the added costs of making a show set in the 1970/1980s (Fincher is also known for shooting an excessive amount of takes, which is another costly aspect to remember here).

As we pointed out, Fincher is currently busy with his “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” spinoff, which is also at Netflix, so when and where these three “Mindhunter” movies could happen is a little fuzzy at the moment. Whatever the case, it sounds like McCallany is ready to go if called up.
