‘The Batman 2’ Script ‘Being Finished,” James Gunn Disputes Recent DC Rumor

Jun 30, 2025

In the past few weeks, it seemed Matt Reeves was set to finish his script for The Batman – Part II by the end of the month, based on recent reporting. Although one of the stars returning in the DC sequel has confirmed that the script is nearly complete, the co-head of DC Studios has disputed a specific turn-in date that surfaced online last week. As of this writing, The Batman 2 is set to release in theaters on Oct. 1, 2027. During an interview at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival 2025, The Batman star Andy Serkis was asked about the highly-anticipated DC sequel, confirming that Reeves is still hard at work on the script. He reassured fans that the script is “being finished,” and is certain The Batman 2 will come out in theaters at some point. Of course, it’s not confirmation that the script will be turned in this month (or the next), but it is another major indicator that the film won’t get made unless the screenplay is at the level it needs to be.
“I am absolutely certain you will see The Batman 2…I know the script is being finished at the moment… [Matt Reeves] would not want it to go forward until in his mind the script is where it needs to be.”

Meanwhile, James Gunn recently disputed a report that claimed that the script for The Batman 2 would be turned in on Monday. “Not true,” Gunn revealed on Threads, in regards to the Puck’s latest reporting about the long-gestated DC Studios project. With a rumored January production start date, it seems Reeves will likely finish and turn in the script sooner rather than later, but a specific “due date” is not in the cards. Gunn has been adamant about not rushing the sequel, especially since it is not a part of the DC Universe, which is getting rebooted this summer with Superman.

James Gunn Tells DC Fans To Lay Off Matt Reeves

Warner Bros.

James Gunn recently revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he is expecting to see a completed script for The Batman – Part II by the end of June. “We feel really good about it,” Gunn revealed, while also concluding that DC fans should take it easy on Matt Reeves. As the DC Studios co-CEO stated, Reeves’ creative process should not be rushed, especially since it was the same for the first film, which got people on board with the franchise in the first place. Put plainly, Gunn wants fans to “get off Matt’s nuts.”
“Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt’s excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I’m totally excited about it. So we can’t wait to read the scripts, but we haven’t read it yet, if that’s your question. People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
