Netflix’s Hit Crime Thriller ‘Adolescence’ Makes Emmy History

Sep 16, 2025

Adolescence was an instant hit on Netflix earlier this year, delivering one of the most powerful stories of the year. Now, the limited series has proven to be a hit with Emmy voters, too, winning the top prize of the night in its respective category and making history with another. Owen Cooper has officially made history after winning in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category for his role in Adolescence. The 15-year-old performer is now the youngest male actor of all time to win an Emmy Award. Joining Cooper is Stephen Graham, who nabbed the award for Outstanding Lead Actor, beating out Colin Farrell for The Penguin, Jake Gyllenhaal for Presumed Innocent, Cooper Koch for Monster, and Brian Tyree Henry for Dope Thief. In the end, Adolescence finished its dominant Emmy run with a win in the Outstanding Limited Series or Movie category. Erin Doherty also won in the Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie category, bringing the Netflix show’s award tally to eight. Other major wins for Adolescence in the Limited Series category include Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Casting, Outstanding Cinematography, and Outstanding Writing. Adolescence was created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, and included an unparalleled performance by 15-year-old Owen Cooper as 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is accused of murdering a classmate who turned him down when he shared his feelings for her. Despite being surrounded by plenty of incredible actors, Cooper’s debut acting appearance became the reason the show became one of the most talked about shows on Netflix for months.
‘Adolescence’ Season Two Could Happen, but Not in the Way You May Think

Adolescence is a show that doesn’t really need a second season. Its power is in telling a complete story, which it did almost impeccably. The show scored 98% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and landed with such an impact that it was even discussed as a topic in schools. With every success, though, comes the infernal question of what comes next? After being the second-most watched TV series ever on Netflix, surpassing even the mighty Stranger Things, it became apparent that there was an interest in continuing the series in some way, and the obvious way would be as an anthology series. In April, it was revealed that Netflix and Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B Entertainment, had started early talks to develop a new season of the show. While Adolescence Season 2 would certainly have a challenge to match its predecessor, it has been suggested that director Philip Barantini will be returning if the show does return, while will be a huge boost. Adolescence delivered its story through a one-take style, with the episodes taking place in a real-time way that put audiences right in the moment. That is something that will continue in a new season, ensuring the same sense of urgency and immersiion as Season 1. Adolescence’s awards success could be push to get Season 2 green lit sooner rather than later.
