Ant-Man 3’s MODOK Designer Addresses Character’s MCU Debut

Jan 2, 2023

MODOK will make his first MCU appearance as part of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but he will have a new design from his previous incarnations.

Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is almost ready to kick off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The movie will not only see the return of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang aka Ant-Man and the rest of his regular Ant-Man team, but also introduces a secret world hidden within our own universe which leads to a first confrontation with one of the many iterations of Kang the Conqueror. However, while all eyes are on the arrival of the Multiverse Saga’s big bad, another villain appearing in the movie will be fan-favorite MODOK. Like a number of incoming Marvel characters, the design of MODOK has been somewhat adapted for his MCU debut, and concept artist Anthony Francisco recently discussed coming up with the character design with speaking with Looper. He said:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I could probably say this: I designed M.O.D.O.K. for this … It’s a huge, and I know they said this during Comic Con, right? I designed him and oh, my God, that’s one of the best experiences. It was so fun because he’s one of my favorite characters that I would draw when I was younger, with him fighting Incredible Hulk. That’s what I used to draw … They knew I was going to do justice with the [way the character was presented in the] comic book. Kevin Feige really liked the takes I had on him, and I can’t wait to show it.”

Francisco also worked on a version of Kang for Quantumania, but he noted that his design was ultimately not used. However, he did go on to tease an Ant-Man movie that is “more epic” than the character’s previous outings. He added:

“They had the actor [Jonathan Majors] come to the presentation. I got to work on him, design some of him. I didn’t get the final design, but it was so much fun working on him and his other looks, and it is going to be more epic than a normal ‘Ant-Man’ movie is going to be.”

How Will Ant-Man 3 Break the Multiverse?

Marvel Studios

Marvel’s journey into the Multiverse has been a long one, from the first mention of alternative realities, including the hidden micro-world of the Quantum Realm, but now the MCU is about to delve deep into the story that will ultimately lead to Avengers: Secret Wars. With the Multiverse already being frayed in Loki, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Quantumania seems set to continue to break open the Multiverse and usher in the biggest threat to the MCU since Thanos.

How exactly all of this will play out is something that very few people currently known, but there are certainly some challenging times coming for Earth’s greatest heroes and it is clear that all of them will probably not make it out alive. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will make its debut in cinemas on February 23, 2023 as the first movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5.
