‘The Paper’s Domhnall Gleeson Reveals the Endearing Advice ‘The Office’s Steve Carell & John Krasinski Gave Him
May 27, 2025
The Office TV universe is set to expand with the upcoming spin-off series, The Paper, which begins airing in September. The show stars Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore as the heads of a failing local newspaper in the Midwest, and even features some familiar faces from the original NBC sitcom. Domhnall Gleeson has already revealed that he spoke to Steve Carell to ask for advice before taking on the role. But, in his new movie, Fountain of Youth, he stars alongside The Office’s biggest prankster, John Krasinski (Jim Halpert in The Office), and he had to get a second opinion on the upcoming spin-off.
Domhnall Gleeson recently sat down with People Magazine to promote Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth, and was asked about his leading role in The Paper. When Gleeson was offered the part, he said his first instinct was to reach out to The Office alumni for advice. He had previously worked with Steve Carell on The Patient and was working with Krasinski on Fountain of Youth. Gleeson said that their advice would have had a make-or-break effect on his decision to take the part; luckily, they were both very supportive and positive. He recalled:
“[John Krasinski] was wonderful. I mean, his big advice that he gave me was to do it. And the same with Steve Carell, another just wonderful actor who I’d worked with before. And their advice was, if it’s Greg Daniels, you should do it because getting to work with him is a treat that not many people get to have.
I mean, I like to think I would’ve got there on my own anyway, but certainly if [John] and Steve had been like, ‘Don’t do it, it’s a nightmare,’ I would’ve hightailed it, but they could not have been more positive about it, and I’m delighted I listened to them.”

Everything We Know About Peacock’s ‘The Office’ Reboot
‘The Office’ is finally getting a follow-up series. With one star set to return, and a new setting, here’s everything we know about The Paper.
In June last year, Steve Carell revealed that Domhnall Gleeson called him about The Paper. Carell said that audiences will love what Gleeson has done in The Paper, calling him “an excellent actor.” Steve Carell didn’t confirm whether he would return as Michael Scott in The Paper, or not.
‘The Paper’ Premieres This September
Peacock
It feels like a very short turnaround between The Paper’s announcement and its upcoming release. The series premieres on Peacock this September, although an exact date hasn’t been revealed. However, the series is just four months away, and all fans have seen is a single still.
The first promo for The Paper was released just last month, and it shows off the entire cast of the new spin-off, including an OG The Office favorite. Gleeson and Impacciatore lead the cast, which also includes The Office’s own Oscar Nunez, suggesting Oscar’s political career has fizzled out, leading to a job in journalism. An official trailer was revealed at this year’s CinemaCon, but it hasn’t been released online. The official synopsis for the show reads:
“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it.”
