Zack Snyder Pokes Fun at ‘Justice League’ “Snyder Cut” in ‘The Studio’

May 9, 2025

Not all heroes wear capes, as evidenced by Zack Snyder in his recent cameo appearance in the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series The Studio. The latest episode of Seth Rogen’s satirical comedy-drama saw the lights, camera, and action move to a fictional Golden Globes ceremony, as Matt Remick (Rogen), the head of Continental Studios, desperately tried to get Zoë Kravitz to thank him in her award acceptance speech. Several other A-listers took to the stage, including Snyder, who took a hilarious shot at his Justice League “Snyder Cut.”
Episode 8 of The Studio, “The Golden Globes,” proved to be a star-studded affair, much like the annual awards ceremony itself, with celebrity cameos from Adam Scott (Severance), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Jean Smart (Hacks), Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing), Ramy Youssef (Poor Things), and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, but Snyder’s turn in the spotlight garnered big laughs from the crowd and viewers at home, as he delivered some self-deprecating humor by poking fun at the 2021 director’s cut of the 2017’s Justice League.

10 Movies With Incredibly Different Director’s Cuts

After the campaign for the Snyder Cut proved successful, let’s look at some other directors’ cuts that fundamentally changed their original movies.

Youssef invited Snyder to take to the mic to present the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy despite being “a man who has done neither” of those genres. Snyder then proceeded to launch into a roast, as is typical with awards shows, but he put himself on the spit, saying, “For any of you who felt like the show has gone by too fast, or felt that it’s not nearly long enough, don’t worry: I’ll be releasing a six-hour, black-and-white, 4:3 version of the show, “Snyder Cut”-style, on digital download and Blu-ray for $29.99.”
The joke is an obvious reference to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the re-edited, four-hour, R-rated cut of the 2017 DC film. The “Snyder Cut” changed the original movie in almost every way, including adding new scenes, expanding character arcs, and laying down a different structure (and even making one version black-and-white). It was released on HBO Max in 2021 following a successful fan campaign that called on Warner Bros. to greenlight the project and allow audiences to see Snyder’s original vision for the Justice League team.
Seth Rogen’s Hollywood Satire Has the Greenlight to Keep Rolling

Apple TV+

The Studio is nearing the end of its first season, with only two episodes left, including the finale on May 21, but fans of the tinseltown satire can rest assured that cameras will be rolling again soon. After all, Hollywood loves a sequel, so it should come as no surprise that The Studio has been renewed for Season 2 by Apple TV+, which means Matt Remick and the team of executives at Continental Studios will be back searching for another tentpole movie in a desperate bid to etch their legacy in the modern era of filmmaking.
The first season of The Studio, co-created by Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, and Frida Perez, debuted in March to rave reviews, garnering a near-perfect score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise for its sharp direction, cinematography, humor, and high-profile ensemble cast. With The Studio getting the greenlight for a second season, the team will likely be hoping to replicate its success with another all-star, laugh-a-minute insider look at the film industry in the next batch of episodes.
