‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot Star Sarah Michelle Gellar Debunks Character Rumor & Explains Why She Returned
May 5, 2025
It seems that some recent revelations about the upcoming Buffy The Vampire Slayer
reboot are being staked through the heart by returning star Sarah Michelle Gellar
. The actress is reprising her role as the former Slayer in a new sequel/reboot of the popular supernatural drama series, and in a recent interview she slayed one recent update on the new show, but offered plenty for fans to get their teeth into.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, leading to the companion series Angel, and creating a legacy that continues to endure over 20 years later. The series starred Gellar as Buffy Summers, with an ensemble of support from a mostly young and unknown cast including David Boreanaz, James Marsters, Allison Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and the late Michelle Trachtenberg, as well as Anthony Stewart Head as the level-headed Watcher, Giles. Now a new Slayer will rise, but it won’t be the one reported a couple of months ago. Despite several publications listing a new group comprising a brainy 16-year-old Slayer named Nova, a wealthy nerd named Hugo, and a vampire expert named Gracie, it seems these are probably the creation of some Chatbot. Gellar told EliteDaily:
“Those are all fake characters. That thing that got released is all fake.

Everything We Know About the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot
After years off air, Buffy is finally coming back to us. Here are all the details.
However, while this once again leaves fans seemingly knowing nothing at all about the reboot, other than Gellar and Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao’s involvement in the project, the actress opened up about why she eventually agreed to return to the show after declining several previous pitches. For those who are still doubting whether the series can work after a 20-year absence, Gellar gave a reason to believe.
“Every pitch I heard was just like, ‘Let’s just do Buffy again.’ Why? But the passion that [Zhao] came to me with, what she wanted to do with the show and the character, and why Buffy is needed now — it was the first time where I thought, ‘OK, there’s a reason.’ We’ve been at this for three-and-a-half, maybe four years now. We won’t do it unless it’s 100% right and there’s 100% a reason.”
The ‘Buffy’ Reboot Is Now Moving Quicker Than Expected
The WB
For a long time, it seemed that every attempt to revive Buffy the Vampire Slayer was going to hit a constant string of stumbling blocks, and for a few years looked like the most unlikely thing in the world. However, since it was announced that a way forward with the franchise’s return had been found, it seems that everything has been moving along much quicker than Gellar originally anticipated.
Back in March, Gellar delivered some good news, as she revealed that preparation for the production was moving along quicker than she anticipated.
“We’ve set up our offices, which means things are progressing probably faster than I’d anticipated. But it’s going to be a process, I think. To do it the way it needs to be done, everyone has to be patient with all of us, because this isn’t something that [will just happen].”
