‘The Batman Part 2’s Andy Serkis Wants More From Alfred and Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ Delayed Sequel

May 31, 2025

Despite countless delays, The Batman Part II is still in development at Warner Bros. and DC Studios. Andy Serkis, who plays Alfred in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, is hoping that the delays will let Reeves and his writing partner, Mattson Tomlin, dive deeper into the most underdeveloped relationship from the original movie. Robert Pattinson is set to return as Batman/Bruce Wayne in the sequel. Fans got to see a bit of Serkis’ Alfred in The Batman, but the character was mostly lost beneath Batman’s mission to find The Riddler (Paul Dano). While the villain for Part II hasn’t been revealed, Serkis hopes that Matt Reeves will devote more attention to the other heroes in Bruce Wayne’s life. Andy Serkis recently appeared at Fan Expo Philadelphia, where he discussed The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, his work on the Planet of the Apes trilogy, and the upcoming The Batman Part II. While discussing the latter, Serkis revealed his hopes for the sequel, including a deeper dive into Alfred’s paternal feelings for Bruce Wayne. The actor described Alfred’s psyche in the first film, saying:
“What I loved about what Matt [Reeves] created in the last one was this sense of a guardian who has not an iota of paternal instinct in him, trying to be a father he could never be. And that was really at the core of their relationship. He really felt he had failed the one person that he adores and tries to look after. He knows how to help him in terms of skills and in terms of cracking codes, and how to fight, and all of those things from being a soldier, from being in the military in his past.”

‘The Batman Part II’ might have to look beyond The Dark Knight’s second year in Gotham.

As for Part II, Andy Serkis hopes that fans get to see the evolution of Alfred’s character and his complex understanding of how to look after and support Bruce Wayne. “The one thing that [Alfred] fails to do is to have a real, proper paternal feeling for him,” Serkis continued. “And I would like to see the exploration of that deeply and go further. I mean, I don’t know anything about the story or where Matt’s taking him, but I would love to see that taken to the extreme, but in a more extreme situation.”
‘The Batman Part II’s Script Is Nearly Complete

The status of The Batman Part II’s script is more mysterious than the identity of The Dark Knight himself (at least, from the perspective of Gotham’s citizens). The script was supposed to be turned in before the new year. However, Reeves and Tomlin have delayed the film several times to perfect the script. The most recent report suggests that Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin are very close to finalizing the film’s script. The sequel is currently slated to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. However, there is always the chance that the film could be delayed even further. Source: FandomWire
