‘Shōgun’ Season 2 Sets Production Start Date, Plot Detalis Revealed

May 2, 2025

While there was initially uncertainty about when the second season of the hit series Shōgun would begin production, an exciting new update has been released on the upcoming installment. A new report from Variety has revealed that the historical drama will begin filming Season 2 in January 2026 in Vancouver. Given the massive success and popularity of Shōgun, stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will also be co-executive producers on the series. Sanada had already received a producer credit on Season 1, making his title of executive producer a well-deserved promotion.
The first season of Shōgun was based on James Clavell’s novel of the same name. The author is well-known for his series of sweeping historical epics, known as the Asian Saga of novels. Interestingly, the 10-episode season covered the entirety of the novel, with there originally not being an intention to continue past the source material. Now, following the record-breaking 18 Emmy wins and the buzz surrounding the show, Sanada and the other producers involved have decided to move forward with the series and go beyond the events of the book.

I’m Sorry, but the Original ‘Shōgun’ Director Is So Wrong About the New Show

To most fans of the modern show, ‘Shōgun’ has been a triumph and another watershed moment for Asian cinema and television.

Moreover, this upcoming second season won’t be the only installment in the Shōgun series. It was reported last year that after mulling the idea of a continuation, FX signed a deal with Sanada to not only return for the second season, but also a third which the network would develop with Clavell’s estate along with Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who produced and created the series’ first season.

Aside from the production start date, Variety also provided an interesting tidbit of information regarding the story of Shōgun Season 2. Aside from the return of Sanada and Jarvis’ characters, Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne, Season 2 will take place 10 years after the events of Season 1. The considerable time skip could lead to a myriad of different stories for the characters. According to Sanada in a previous report, the show will continue to draw on real-world Japanese history to shape the story and trajectory of the characters.
FX reported that Shōgun was the most-watched program in the network’s history, a telltale sign of why it grew beyond its initial limited series moniker. Aside from its astounding number of Emmy wins, the show would also win the Golden Globe for best drama series as it continued to dominate the critical space. Given the history that serves as the basis for the novel and first season, it’s no surprise that FX found potential in continuing the story beyond the source material.
Given the 2026 production start date, fans shouldn’t expect the second season of Shōgun to air until sometime around late 2026 or early 2027. While viewers wait to see the next saga of this historical epic, FX has plenty of other highly anticipated series being released this year. Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth is one such series, which is set to premiere on FX on Hulu this summer. The Bear Season 4 has also received an official release date, as the network continues to produce high-quality television.
