Evan Peters’ Golden Globes Win has angered Shirley Hughes, the mother of Tony Hughes.

Netflix

In September, Netflix dropped Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a ten-episode series that explored the real-life serial killer from childhood to death. On the show, Evan Peters starred as the famous serial killer. As reported by Buzzfeed.News, Dahmer is known to have murdered 17 people between 1978 and 1991. He also confessed to eating parts of his victims’ bodies. Due to the gruesome nature of the events that took place, some of the victims’ family members criticized the series and claimed the Netflix show was “retraumatizing” the families that lost loved ones to Dahmer. Most recently, Shirley Hughes, the mother of Dahmer victim Tony Hughes, spoke out against Peters’ recent Golden Globes win.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has been no stranger to various criticisms since its release. Even Peters’ performance as Dahmer received backlash as some suggested that the star’s portrayal had distracted audiences from the serial killer’s brutal crimes and instead made them empathize with Dahmer. Other viewers even admitted that the conventionally attractive Peters led them to have a crush on Dahmer.

Still, despite the controversies, Monster became one of Netflix’s most popular shows and received more than 196 million hours viewed in its first week on the streaming service. Peters also received critical praise for his performance as Dahmer, and at Tuesday’s Golden Globes, the actor won what many believe to be the first of many awards for the show.

While accepting the award, Peters stated that taking on the role of Dahmer had been “difficult,” and he thanked his loved ones for helping him through a tough period. After thanking the cast and crew of Monster, he said, “I want to thank my family, friends, and loved ones who helped pick me up when I fell and carried me to the finish line.” He continued, “And lastly but most importantly, I want to thank everyone out there who watched this show,” he went on. “It was a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch, but I sincerely hope some good came out of it.”

Evan Peters’ Acceptance Speech Has Received Backlash for Not Mentioning Dahmer’s Victims or Their Families

Netflix

However, Peters’ speech received backlash as some people on social media called him out for not mentioning the victims or their family members.

“I think some sort of acknowledgement of the victims was the least Evan Peters could do during his acceptance speech.. a tad disappointed ngl, esp after all the backlash and feedback it got from victims’ real-life family members,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“i find it hilarious how evan peters thanked the viewers, netflix and the HFP for his award but made zero acknowledgement to the victims of JD and victims families who were not compensated/credited for their stories being leeched upon,” stated another.

Similarly, Shirley Hughes, mother of Dahmer victim Tony Hughes, appeared to agree with the criticism of Peters’ speech. While speaking with TMZ, Hughes expressed her anger at the star’s Golden Globe win and said that Peters should have, at the very least, used the acceptance speech to mention the victims’ families who are still suffering. Hughes also dismissed Peters’ “hope” that something positive would come from the series and questioned why he’d even taken the role in the first place.

“There’s a lot of sick people around the world, and people winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going and this makes sick people thrive on the fame.”

She later added, “It’s a shame that people can take our tragedy and make money. The victims never saw a cent. We go through these emotions every day.”
