Jan 26, 2023
Dwayne Johnson has made no secret that he wants to have an input on the future of the DCEU, but how big will that input actually be?

Dwayne Johnson has muscled his way into plenty of places over the years in his movies, but his imminent debut as Black Adam seems to have seen him bursting open the doors on a long-term role in developing the future direction of the DCEU. As well as being at the center of internet rumors around a proposed smackdown with Henry Cavill’s Superman, there are many fans who believe that Johnson is about to take some kind of Kevin Feige role as the head of the entire DCEU franchise at Warner Bros. Discovery. However, the actor has now clarified where he stands on that happening, telling Variety that he sees himself in more of an advisory role for the franchise’s next steps.

Dwayne Johnson makes an impact in any movie he appears in, and the first reviews of Black Adam suggest that he is now doing it all over again as part of the DCEU. Unlike many other stars who have come into the franchise, though, Johnson isn’t about to sit back and let his character simply fade into the also-rans and is taking a much more aggressive stance on the future of Black Adam and the Warner Bros. Discover franchise as a whole. When asked whether he would be heading up the DCEU’s future, the former wrestler paused, then said:
“You’re very kind to ask that question. I think the best position that I could be for DC is one as advisor where I can help and I can help greatly. I loved DC to my blood as a little boy, I grew up loving the Super friends, specifically Superman. I saw my first Black Adam comic, and it was arresting to me. His face was intense, he looked cool, looked different, badass, and had brown skin so automatically I was relating to him. So I am DC through and through and in the spirit of growing out the DC Universe, I’m here to help in any way I can, including looking for and finding that right leader or leaders.”

Dwayne Johnson Wants to Shake Up the DCEU
Warner Bros. Pictures
The DCEU’s problems have been many in the last several years, with disjointed storytelling, abandoned projects, director issues, and more. However, the reason so many people seem to believe that Dwayne Johnson is coming to save the franchise is because he has been speaking passionately about his love of DC for a long while now. Even in bringing Black Adam to the screen, Johnson has previously said that he wants it to appeal to everyone, no matter what genre they love. He commented:
“That’s a great question because you have an opportunity now to introduce a new IP to the world and then a new group IP in the JSA. It was also important [that] if we’re going to make a movie, I think that it’s got to be disruptive. That’s going to be cool. That’s going to be provoking in your thoughts. We want to take care of the action enthusiast. We want to take care of the comic book enthusiast. We want to take care of the superhero genre enthusiast, the super-fans, but also, if you want to go a little deeper philosophically with how things are around the world currently, then there’s a bit of that in Black Adam for you, too.”
Black Adam opens in cinemas on October 21.
