Comedy Series Emmys 2025 Predictions And Contenders

Apr 23, 2025

Do we have a competitive race to win the Comedy Series Emmy? We might! After “Hacks” stunned many (including the entire in-person audience) by triumphing over “The Bear” last year, both series have new seasons vying for the crown. But there is also some new blood and an unexpected wrinkle for 2025.

The latter occurred at the SAG Awards this past February, where, to the shock of many (it’s been a crazy decade, hasn’t it?), “Only Murders in the Building” beat both “Hacks” and “The Bear” for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series honor. This was the Hulu series’ fourth time up to bat, and it had not won a single SAG Award seven times previously, except for earlier that night when Martin Short took Male Actor in a Comedy Series. This is notable because actors, who are essentially SAG members, make up the largest proportion of the Television Academy’s 26,000 and counting membership. That being said, “Only Murders” is going up against a new season of “Hacks,” which is currently being released, and “The Bear” still has its fans. Still, a notable wrinkle worth paying attention to.
The other notable twist is the arrival of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s “The Studio.” The Apple TV+ dramedy focuses on a contemporary, but fictional Hollywood movie studio, the sort of content most industry voters eat up. Plus, the series itself is not only a love letter to the entertainment business, but Los Angeles as well. Will it hit too close home or will voters embrace its brilliance?
Other series hoping to earn one of eight nominee slots include the venerable “Abbott Elementary,” Netflix’s fall breakout “Nobody Wants This,” the final go-around of FX’s beloved “What We Do In the Shadows,” and the improved second season of Apple TV+’s “Shrinking.”
There is also a long list of potential party crashers, including “Agatha All Along,” “A Man on the Inside,” “The Residence,” “The Four Seasons,” and “St. Denis Medical,” among others. [Posted April 23]
