‘Superman’s Nathan Fillion Says DCU Green Lantern Role Is “Beyond My Wildest” Dreams

May 26, 2025

Getting a role in a major comic book movie is a dream that a lot of actors have, especially when that role is as one of the members of the Justice League. But for Superman star, Nathan Fillion, it’s a childhood dream come true. James Gunn’s Superman (starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel) is technically Fillion’s second time playing a member of the Green Lantern Corps, as the actor voiced Hal Jordan in several DC Animated Universe movies. But playing Guy Gardner will mark Fillion’s live-action Green Lantern debut, and the actor can’t believe he gets to wield a power ring in real life.
Nathan Fillion took to Instagram to share his joy at being cast as Guy Gardner in Superman, and the wider DCU. “Being a part of the new Superman movie is a dream beyond my wildest,” the actor wrote in a new post. Fillion shared a photo of his pristine and graded copy of Green Lantern #59, which marked the first appearance of Guy Gardner in DC Comics. His caption continued:

“I collected comics as a kid. Imagine telling that young boy that as an adult, he’d be flying around with Superman, wielding the power of a Green Lantern! I’m so fortunate, not only to be enjoying this childhood vision realized, but also to have wonderful friends who support and celebrate these joys along with me. One of them was kind enough to gift me with Guy Gardner’s first appearance back in March of 1968, never touched by human hands. What a rare treasure- both the comic, and you, Bill Roe. You sure know how to make a fella feel special. Love ya.”

James Gunn Confirms DCU Movie & TV Show Release Schedule Through to 2026 and a Simplistic Watch Order

Answering a question about viewing order of the DCU, James Gunn seems to have confirmed when ‘Lanterns’ will debut.

Fillion didn’t reveal the grading rating of the comic in the photo, but if it truly was “never touched by human hands,” then that’s one expensive gift! Fans got the best look yet at Guy Gardner in the most recent trailer for ‘Superman.’ As well as using his own powers, Guy Gardner was also shown fighting alongside his teammates, Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi).
Nathan Fillion Should Have a Long DCU Career

The rebooted DCU is still in its infancy. Only the animated series, Creature Commandos, has been released so far. Superman is the next to reach audiences when it flies into theaters on July 11. Some of the film’s cast, like Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Merced’s Hawkgirl, are only set to appear in Superman and haven’t been announced for further DCU projects (yet). But Nathan Fillion is one of the lucky ones who has been offered DCU tenure.
Following Superman, Fillion will appropriately reprise his role in the upcoming HBO Max series, Lanterns. The show, which is currently in production, has been described as a sci-fi take on True Detective, a description that has a lot of fans excited. The series will introduce Hal Jordan and John Stewart to the DCU, who will be played by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, respectively.
