Dwayne Johnson Says the DCEU Can Crossover With Joker, The Batman and More DC Properties

Jan 31, 2023

According to Black Adam’s Dwayne Johnson, all DC movies exist in the same universe and could cross paths at any point.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Dwayne Johnson is fast becoming a driving force when it comes to the direction the DCEU is heading at Warner Bros. Discovery. If he gets his way, that is going to mean some very different DC projects will eventually all cross paths someday. While Marvel Studios has spent more than a decade ensuring that all of their movies and now TV series fit together in some way with a shared universe, Warner Bros. has not taken quite as coherent an approach. This means that there are many disjointed DC projects that seem to be set in completely different worlds. However, Johnson doesn’t believe that they cannot come together. The Black Adam star told EstoEs COMBO:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“The fans will always guide you where you need to go. That’s the new era I talk about in the DC Universe. And in the DC Universe — they haven’t always listened to fans in the past, but things are different. In Black Adam, things are different. So that’s why we can introduce the JSA. That’s why in Black Adam, Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash — they all co-exist in our world.
Black Adam’s not over here, and Joker’s over here, and you know, Justice League is over here. In our world, they all exist. Ideally, in my mind — it’s a little crazy — they all cross paths. Because the fans want that. And there’s a good, creative way that we could figure that out, they all cross paths. So Black Adam colliding with all of these characters in the DC Universe, we come to the table with that open mind. If you said to me, ‘Suicide Squad?’ I say, ‘Yes.’ ‘Justice League?’ I say, ‘Yes.’ You name them, open up the book. Everything.”

Dwayne Johnson is Driving the DCEU Down a New Route

Although he has admitted that he is not planning on becoming the DCEU’s equivalent of Kevin Feige, it is clear that Dwayne Johnson is looking to integrate himself into the franchise in some way. He previously talked about committing himself to the future of Black Adam and has also expressed an interest in running close to the franchise in an “advisory” capacity. What this means in real terms is yet to be seen, but at the moment, it looks like Johnson is somehow steering a ship that he isn’t the captain of.

For several years, the DCEU has frustrated many fans and, indeed, Warner Bros. with some hits and a number of misses, as well as its inability to pull together its greatest assets. To further hammer home that point, the biggest DC hits of recent years have been stand-alone projects such as Joker and The Batman, rather than what should have been the almighty DCEU collaborative. With Johnson now suggesting that all of these different pieces of DC’s cinematic output can come together in some way, it will be interesting to see whether the studio sees things the same way or has a completely different direction they want to go.
