Zack Snyder Fans Slam New ‘Superman’ Trailer as They Continue Calls to Bring Back Henry Cavill
May 21, 2025
If we had a nickel for every time Zack Snyder fans were upset about James Gunn’s Superman, and the rebooted DC universe, we’d be richer than Lex Luthor. The latest trailer for Superman was recently released online, and the response from the Snyder-cult has been incredibly predictable. While many praised the new trailer and continued to call the film this year’s most anticipated new release, Snyder fans had very contrasting reactions. Social media platforms were flooded with negative backlash, ranging from nitpicking to continuing to petition for David Corenswet to be replaced with Henry Cavill.
Unsurprisingly, X (formerly Twitter) was the biggest festering ground for the backlash. Die-hard Snyder supporters swarmed the platform with hateful tweets about the most minute of details, proclaiming them all to be reasons why James Gunn has ruined Superman. “Anyways here’s the Superman movie trailer for what I’ll be watching on July 11th,” wrote @jkbaker1117, sharing a clip of the Man of Steel trailer. “This new Superman trailer is proof that Gunn just doesn’t get it,” said @ZeM6108. “Snyder gave us a Superman who felt like a god among men. Gunn’s version? Powerless, weightless, and completely lacking Aura.”

The filmmaker appeared on stage to present the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy despite being “a man who has done neither.”
Others picked out single scenes and shots from the new trailer and compared them with Zack Snyder’s past DCEU entries, while making some strange claims. “This perfectly encapsulates the difference between Zack Snyder and James Gunn as filmmakers,” wrote @BatKilmer. Their post showed the clip from Batman vs. Superman where Superman and Zod destroy Metropolis from Bruce Wayne’s POV above the scene where Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio) takes a selfie with Superman fighting in the background from the new Superman trailer. Others even went so far as to examine the colorful superhero film for its scientific accuracy. “This woman would be absolutely dead by the way if this wasn’t a cartoon of a movie,” wrote @kayivar as Superman saves a woman from being crushed by a kaiju.
Zack Snyder Supports the New DC Universe
Warner Bros.
While the die-hard Zack Snyder cult fights endlessly with anyone who mentions James Gunn’s Superman online, the director himself is supportive of the rebooted DC Universe. “You know, I’m a pretty open book,” he told CBR last year. “If the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in. I’m pretty excited. I mean, we’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so we’ll see what that’s like.” For those who are open to seeing what James Gunn has in store for Superman and the wider DC Universe, the new movie opens in theaters on July 5.
One of the biggest points of contention among DC and Zack Snyder fans is Henry Cavill being recast as the Man of Steel, with David Corenswet playing Superman in the new movie. To many, Henry Cavill was the best big-screen Superman. Hashtags like #RestoretheSnyderverse and #HenryCavillSuperman repeatedly trend online whenever a new promo for James Gunn’s Superman is released. This time round has been no different. However, Cavill is likely too busy to return as Superman, even if DC Studios would have him back. The actor is set to star in Chad Stahelski’s upcoming Highlander reboot, as well as three more movies with Guy Ritchie, following The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare last year.
