Henry Cavill Says he Quickly Realized Any Superman Return Was Out of His Control

Feb 4, 2023

Henry Cavill has finally made his long-awaited return as the Man of Steel.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Henry Cavill has officially returned to his iconic role as Superman, which the actor confirmed on an Instagram post last month. In his statement, Cavill thanked his fans and supporters for their patience, promising they would be rewarded. It’s been nearly a decade since Superman received his own solo film, as Man of Steel released in 2013, followed by two appearances in team-up movies with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Audiences can’t wait for more Cavill in his captivating role, with Man of Steel 2 reportedly in the works. The actor sat down with Deadline’s The Film That Lit My Fuse series, discussing his return and why he knew any future Superman projects and his involvement were entirely out of his control.

“As an actor, you have to learn that there are things out of your control, no matter what you may think, no matter how your performance was, no matter what factors were not in your control in the first place, no matter how the audience feels. It was something which I had to very gently hold onto in my heart, because I didn’t know whether I would have the opportunity to play it again… [But] the opportunity was very important to get again, and I’m very, very lucky and feel very privileged to have that opportunity now.”

Henry Cavill Wants to Return to a “Hopeful” Superman

Warner Bros. Pictures

Henry Cavill has stated how his return as Superman will be more “joyful” compared to his previous iterations. During his Deadline interview, the actor commented on how he can’t wait to bring a sense of goodness and hope to the character that audiences may not have seen with the recent DC Universe movies.

“There’s something so true and honest and hopeful, which is the best of all of us, and I love that. I think it’s the thing which we all truly yearn for, deep, deep down, which is goodness, and everyone being good, and good to one another, and helping one another. Even at our most cynical, I think that deep down, that’s what we want.”

Now that James Gunn has taken over as co-CEO of DC Studios, the connected universe is expected to make some significant changes. We can anticipate a different interpretation of Superman in his next film as the DCU shifts from what was previously established. The recently released Black Adam does a great job setting up the franchise’s future, and fans can’t wait to see what Gunn, Cavill, and Dwayne Johnson have to offer.
