DCU’s ‘Lanterns’ Series Casts Nicole Ari Parker As John Stewart’s Mother
Mar 12, 2025
Lanterns
is one of the most anticipated upcoming superhero shows, as fans pray that the new HBO series will finally do the Green Lantern Corps justice in live-action. Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler will bring John Stewart and Hal Jordan to life in the new series, respectively, with Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner (who will first debut in Superman) also confirmed to appear in the show. Much of the new series remains a mystery, including its main villain. But, DC Studios is teasing fans by drip-feeding new information about Lanterns. In the latest update, the series just cast one of its most pivotal characters.
Per Variety, DC Studios’ Lanterns series has cast Nicole Ari Parker
as Bernadette, the mother of Pierre’s John Stewart. Parker is best known for starring in shows like Time After Time, And Just Like That…, and Empire. While the role of being a superhero’s parent is a dangerous one in the world of comic books, considering how many of them are orphaned, Bernadette has been described as a recurring part, meaning she will likely play a key role in the series and in shaping John Stewart into Green Lanterns material. The official character description reads:
“Formidable and tenacious, Bernadette refuses to give up, no matter how insurmountable the odds. At her core, she’s a fiercely protective mother who has worked her entire life to ensure that she and her family will not be passed over.”

Nicole Ari Parker joins an increasingly impressive cast in Lanterns. As well as Pierre and Chandler, the show also stars Kelly Macdonald, Poorna Jagannathan, Garret Dillahunt, and Ulfrich Thomsen. Many of the character details remain a secret. However, it has been confirmed that Thomsen will be playing the iconic villain Sinestro, a former member of the Green Lantern Corps who abandons them to form the Yellow Lantern Corps, who are powered by fear instead of hope.
‘Lanterns’ Releases on HBO in 2026
DC Comics
After the immense success of The Penguin, fans have high hopes for Lanterns, thanks in large part to the HBO label. Providing the series is successful, it will mark the first of many new live-action shows set within the rebooted DC Universe. If Lanterns is a hit, it will also likely be the first of many adventures for John Stewart and Hal Jordan in the DCU, as James Gunn has previously explained that many characters will bounce between TV, movies, and animation within the franchise.
Lanterns hasn’t been given an exact release date yet. However, DC Studios are eyeing a 2026 release for the new series. Production is officially underway on Lanterns and fans finally have their first look at Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The first-look image didn’t reveal their Green Lantern suits. Although it did reveal what the DCU’s Green Lantern rings will look like. In Superman, Guy Gardner will wear a makeshift suit created by Maxwell Lord. However, he and the rest of the heroes in the movie are expected to ditch those suits by the end of the film, meaning Gardner, Stewart, and Jordan will likely have a new look by the time Lanterns rolls around.
