Netflix Renews ‘Long Story Short’ Despite Season One Not Being Out Yet

Aug 4, 2025

Show renewals are hard to get nowadays. Several factors influence a series’ chances of growth. Many networks and streamers look for high audience viewership, how much the show gains traction in the media, especially on social apps, the financial side (how costly it is to make the show), etc. Whatever doesn’t yield a return on its investment gets the “doomed” canceled tag. Yet, there are times a show hears the sweet sounds of renewal, even before season 1 becomes available. Netflix just made the rare decision to renew Raphael Matthew Bob-Waksberg’s upcoming animated comedy, Long Story Short, weeks before its users can stream the debut season. It seems like the streamer believes it’ll be love at first sight with Netflix users and the new animation, which is set to premiere on August 22, 2025. According to The Hollywood Reporter, season 1 will have 10 episodes, and they’ll be thirty minutes long each. News of the renewal comes as Netflix released a trailer for the series that showcases the Schwooper siblings and their lives. The logline reads:
“Jumping through the years, we follow the Schwooper siblings from childhood to adulthood and back again, chronicling their triumphs, disappointments, joys, and compromises.”
In the footage, viewers are introduced to the Schwooper family, and it starts with a shot of the family’s home. Those watching are then taken into the house, where the family is gathered at a table, arguing and playing a game. While each character is speaking over the other, one says, “This is why you don’t play games with your family. Your family is not your friends.” Throughout the trailer, viewers are briefly introduced to the characters as they see the children growing up into adults and witness firsthand that adult life is not easy.
‘Long Story Short’ Isn’t Bob-Waksberg’s First Netflix Animated Comedy

Netflix

Long Story Short stars Lisa Edelstein as Naomi Schwartz, Paul Reiser as Elliott Cooper, Ben Feldman as Avi Schwooper, Abbi Jacobson as Shira Schwooper, Max Greenfield as Yoshi Schwooper, Angelique Cabral as Jen, and Nicole Byer as Kendra Hooper. There will also be recurring and guest-starring characters. The animation is created, written, and produced by Bob-Waksberg; he’s also the showrunner and was pretty excited about the news of the renewal, as shown in his statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Wow!! A season two?! And season one hasn’t even come out yet! It must be a REALLY good show. I can’t wait to watch it when it premieres on Netflix, Friday, August 22! Let’s all do that!”
Bob-Waksberg clearly has the skills to make an animated hit, since he created one for the streamer in the past, which is probably why his latest was renewed so quickly. In 2014, the creator made the adult animation BoJack Horseman, and it is primarily set in Hollywood. BoJack is a “washed-up” horse who found success in a 1990s sitcom, but now struggles to make a comeback. He sets his eyes on a ghostwritten autobiography to rise back to fame. The series uses the voices of Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins, and Aaron Paul. Source: The Hollywood Reporter
