Alex Wolff Teases New Directorial Feature ‘If She Burns,’ Starring Justice Smith, Victoria Pedretti

Apr 29, 2025

Acclaimed actor Alex Wolff has worked with some of the biggest directors working today, from Ari Aster (Hereditary) to Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer). And after directing his own feature, The Cat and the Moon (2019), Wolff has another project he’s helming in the works. It’s called If She Burns and features rising stars like Justice Smith (I Saw the TV Glow). MovieWeb recently caught up with Wolff while he was promoting his new comedy Magic Farm, directed by Amalia Ulman (El Planeta) and also starring the great Chloë Sevigny. Wolff took time to talk about his upcoming project and how it’s connected to his latest film release.

“Doing Magic Farm definitely helped me in terms of seeing the way that Amalia — whatever she was married to, in terms of her style of shooting or shots for scenes, and she was also so devoted to capturing the culture,” Wolff told MovieWeb. “I learned so much from Amalia’s freedom… She showed that you have to have a real eye on the place, and I really felt like that was the reason [Magic Farm] feels so authentic, is because of her presence. And so when I was scouting for my film, when I got there, I do think I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a great section’… Not really just thinking about what I’d planned in my head or the script, more thinking about what authentically adds that tactile element. I’m really excited to make it, and the actors in it are going to be amazing.”

Wolff also revealed that his new film begins shooting this summer:

“We’re just working everybody’s schedules out. But [lead actress] Victoria Pedretti, who is one of the great rising stars of our generation, and reminds me of all the great actors that I love and has sort of the privacy of, like, of a Chloë [Sevigny], or reminds me some Swedish actors from the ’50s who — you really don’t feel like you’re supposed to be watching her performances. It doesn’t matter how big the thing is, it almost feels like you’re in a private room where it’s achingly vulnerable. So I think she’s really got that. And Asa Butterfield is amazing, and Justice Smith is amazing. And I’ve gotten really lucky.”

Wolff’s Magic Farm co-star Sevigny was also part of our interview and weighed in on why the film’s performers — each excellent in unique ways — were able to mesh so well, and how that dynaimc started in pre-production. “I invited them to some functions that I was hosting, and we were kind of like seeing each other around town, you know, feeling each other out,” Sevigny told MovieWeb. “Our seduction process was happening kind of early on, flirting with everyone, you know? But then we got on. We luckily all just got on, like a house on fire. It was amazing. I mean, we had so much fun making this movie. We were all huge fans of El Planeta and just wanted to be there for Amalia, support her, give her our all, do the best that we could to uplift this incredible artist.”
Check out the artistry for yourself. From Mubi, Magic Farm is now playing in select theaters.
