Willem Dafoe Asked Emma Stone to Slap Him 20 Times in Their Upcoming Movie AND for a Scene He Wasn’t Even In — GeekTyrant

Mar 11, 2023

Four-time Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, The Lighthouse) is known for playing very dramatic roles, and his next film, AND, sounds like par for the course. The movie, which has kept its synopsis tightly under wraps, features co-stars Hong Chau, Emma Stone, Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer, Mamoudou Athie, and Joe Alwyn. While we don’t know what the ensemble piece is all about yet, Dafoe has hinted that he takes the role very seriously. In a recent profile published by The New York Times, it’s revealed that Dafoe asked to be slapped repeatedly for a scene in which he does not even appear on camera. Stone slaps Dafoe’s character, who is off camera in the shot. But that didn’t stop Dafoe from wanting to be present on set even though he wasn’t required to be there. The film’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, who previously worked with Stone in The Favourite and also directed The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, said of Dafoe: “That’s what you want from actors. To want to be part of it in any way.”Stone commented on her co-star, saying:“There’s this instinct to perform that many actors have — the ‘look at me, look at me!’ kind of performer. He’s the opposite of that. Maybe it’s changed through the years. A lot of actors I bond with have been doing this for a long time, and you know they’ve gone from ‘I’ to ‘We.’”AND is in post-production, and we should have a release date and some details soon. Dafoe next stars in Focus Features’ thriller Inside, opening in theaters March 17.via: Variety
