Richard Madden & Priyanka Chopra Jonas Are Mind-Wiped Spies In The Russo Brothers’ New Series

Mar 30, 2023

Another year, another super-expensive TV series to premiere on Prime Video. And while the $250 million budget for “Citadel” isn’t as costly as “The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power,” it indicates that Amazon wants its new spy thriller to be another juggernaut for its streamer. But will there be a fanbase for yet another spy series on TV, especially one with so many spinoffs planned? Only time will tell.

“Citadel” stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jones as two elite spies who had their memories wiped and thrust back into the world they left behind after an old colleague tracks them down. How far will they go to discover the truth? All around the world, apparently: from the Italian Alps, to India, Spain, and Mexico.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Citadel,” courtesy of Prime Video:
Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency – tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people – was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.
Along with stars Madden and Chopra Jonas, “Citadel” also stars Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville, Osy Ikhile, Ashleigh Cummings, Roland Møller, and Caoilinn Springall.
David Weil, Josh Appelbaum, and Bryan Oh share co-writing duties on “Citadel,” with Angela Russo-Otstot, Melissa Glenn, and Jesse Alexander also in the mix. The Russo Brothers serve as producers on the series, and its other spinoffs, which partially explains the show’s gargantuan budget.
So will “Citadel” usher in a new breed of TV-based spy thriller? Or is this show so big it can’t help but fail? Tune into Prime Video on April 28 when the show’s first two episodes premiere. The rest of the six-episode series premieres weekly after that. Watch the new trailer for “Citadel” below.
