Larry David Sets HBO Return With Surprising New ‘Curb’-Free Series

Jul 13, 2025

He’s back! If you enjoyed Larry David playing a fictionalized version of himself in Curb Your Enthusiasm, his next project might blow you away. David and all of his enthusiasm are making an HBO return, but not in the way you think. This time, he’s working with a former president on a special limited series. According to a press release, HBO ordered an untitled American history sketch comedy, which will star Larry, who will also executive produce. Higher Ground, Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company founded in 2018, will also executive produce. The half-hour sketch comedy, according to its logline, will honor America’s 250th anniversary, but with a twist. It reads, “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion…But then Larry David called.” Curb Your Enthusiasm fans will be in for a treat as the limited series, which will have six episodes, will feature special guest appearances from some of the actors and other “noteworthy” guest stars. None are revealed in the release, but playing the guessing game is what keeps fans interested while they wait for a premiere date. David and Jeff Schaffer are writing the untitled project, with Schaffer also serving as director.

Larry David has accomplished a lot throughout his career, winning two Emmys and three Writers Guild of America Awards (two for Seinfeld, one for Curb Your Enthusiasm). The HBO series, which had 12 seasons, 120 episodes, and a special, left a mark on television history with 55 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, a solid fan base, and has no seasons with a Rotten Tomatoes score of less than 74% (and three perfect score seasons). When it ended, David celebrated with a three-day foam party… which resulted in an allergic reaction, prompting him to make a TV return.
Once ‘Curb’ ended, I celebrated with a three-day foam party. After a violent allergic reaction to the suds, I yearned to return to my simple life as a beekeeper, harvesting organic honey from the wildflowers in my meadow. Alas, one day my bees mysteriously vanished. And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive.

What Everyone Has to Say About Working With Larry David on This New Sketch Comedy

HBO

Working with a comedy legend like David is an honor for many, and the executive vice president, head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Programming, Amy Gravitt, said,
“It’s hard to remember a time before Curb, or without Larry David’s perspective on modern life. We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a glimpse at our shared history as we celebrate our Semiquincentennial.”
Jeff Schaffer described Larry’s characters as ones that didn’t change history but were “largely ignored by history. And that’s a good thing.” Former President Barack Obama said even sitting across the world’s most difficult leaders couldn’t have prepared him for working with the legendary comedian. “I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.” Source: Warner Bros. Discovery
