Tubi Resurrects Sc-Fi Comedy Series ‘Demascus’ Following AMC Cancellation

Jul 9, 2025

One network/streamer’s canceled show is another one’s treasure, or however that saying goes. Free streaming platform, Tubi, always has a new way to reel in an audience; its catalog includes everything from classic movies to television shows, providing individuals with a free way to stream their favorite productions. It’s also a great way for independent and B-movie filmmakers to grow an audience, as thousands of those projects are uploaded. In addition to updating their catalog monthly with fan-favorites, the streamer also has Tubi Originals, and a scrapped AMC sci-fi comedy will be added to its site after being canceled in 2023. According to Deadline, Demascus, created by playwright Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm and producer Mark Johnson, will premiere on Tubi on August 7. The series will debut on the free streamer, owned by FOX, after FOX struck a deal with AMC Networks. Demascus will have six parts and follows a 30-something year-old Black man on a journey of self-discovery who uses an experimental reality-bending technology. It stars actor and singer Okieriete Onaodowan (Station 19) as Demascus, Janet Hubert (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), Caleb Eberhardt, and Shakira Ja’nai Paye. Legendary comedian Martin Lawrence also appears in a recurring role. The characters in the show appear in different ways, depending on the lead character’s reality.

Tubi’s SVP Content Acquisition and Partnerships, Samuel Harowitz, said that the streamer is excited to bring the series to its audience. “We’re excited to introduce audiences to Demascus — a bold, genre-bending blend of comedy and sci-fi that challenges conventions as much as it entertains. At Tubi, we champion stories that surprise, provoke, delight and resonate deeply with engaged fandoms, and Demascus is exactly the kind of original storytelling we’re proud to spotlight.” Mark Johnson added, “We thank AMC Studios for sharing our belief in this seriocomic series and Tubi for its steadfast conviction that it belongs on the air.”
The Cast and Crew of ‘Demascus’ Waited Two Years for Good News

In 2023, AMC Networks canceled the series as part of a larger cost-cutting measure. It was given a series order in February 2022, and production was finished when it was canceled. Two years ago, show creator Chisholm spoke to VIBE during the 2023 South By Southwest conference and festival about its uniqueness and how they were patiently awaiting a permanent home.
“It started out as a play. I sort of fell in love with the character, because it was me and my wife and the people I know. And I had never seen them anywhere. At the time, I was also a traveling playwright, and I was going from one place to place. And I felt like in each location, I became a different person…I’m just hoping for a place where people can see it [and] that’s on a base level. I think the more people who can see it, the better. And I think a lot of people are going to see it and see themselves and see people that they know and people they haven’t seen on TV before.”
