Edgerunners’ Officially Renewed for Season 2

Jul 8, 2025

It’s happening! Arguably the best sci-fi action series on Netflix is finally coming back for a second season! The streamer is home to some phenomenal sci-fi shows, including the likes of Stranger Things, Lost in Space, and 3 Body Problem. But, the best one on the platform isn’t a live-action series. In fact, it’s an anime. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, based on the video game Cyberpunk 2077 by CD Projekt Red, is one of the most acclaimed anime of recent years, and fans have been desperate for a second season since the show dropped in 2022. This year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles brought with it many treats for anime fans. But one of the biggest and most exciting snippets of news was the Edgerunners update that fans have been waiting for. At CD Projekt Red’s Anime Expo panel, which has since been uploaded to Twitch, the company officially announced that its new anime would be a sequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. CD Projekt Red had previously teased that another Cyberpunk animated project was on the way, but fans knew very little about it. However, we now know far more than we were expecting following the panel. The new series will move away from David and Lucy’s story (those who watched Season 1 will know why) and explore a new cast of characters within Night City.

These anime series don’t shy away from mature themes and thought-provoking narratives, featuring graphic violence and bleak atmospheres.

The new protagonist wasn’t revealed during the panel. However, the announcement also came with the first teaser trailer for the show’s second season. Living up to its moniker, the trailer teased who fans will be following for the second adventure in Night City. The unnamed male protagonist will be a child who has an obsession with cameras. That’s all we know so far. No release date or window has officially been revealed yet. But the teaser confirmed that Season 2, or, as the new show is called, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II, is now in production. Studio Trigger returns to animate the second season.
‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Was One of the Best Anime of This Decade

Even if you’re not a die-hard anime obsessive (you’re missing out on a lot of great shows), most sci-fi fans have probably heard of Edgerunners by now. The 10-episode anime was initially pitched as a Limited Series. The story follows David, a student at the prestigious Arasaka Academy, who becomes an Edgerunner — a tech-infused mercenary — following the death of his mother. Along with his new companion, Lucy, and a consortium of other weird and wonderful Edgerunners, David blasts his way to the top of the city’s criminal underworld. As previously mentioned, CD Projekt Red had already confirmed that another Cyberpunk anime was in development. However, fans weren’t sure if it would place them back in Night City, or if it would explore one of the other locations in the futuristic sci-fi world. Within the franchise, including the video games, fans have only been able to venture into Night City. The rest of the world has been a mystery. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 1 is streaming on Netflix. Season 2 will land on the same streaming platform sometime in the future. Source: CD Projekt Red
